Our little trio just moved into an old farmhouse. We are only renters, so we have to be somewhat careful with our surroundings. Our utilities are included, but I am sure that won’t stay that way if our HVAC bill skyrockets. You see, they have a wood burning stove that we are to use before or instead of the formal heating unit. They provide all the wood, so that isn’t a concern. The owners swear by the heat that it gives off for the entire house in the winter. But, really, I have never been one to build a fire in the first place! I was worried. I was definitely struggling the first few months. So much so that when I found the portable heater in the storage closet, I began relying on it instead of the fire. I thought I was being very sly about this. I didn’t think anyone noticed that I was even using it. Then as we started to enter spring, the owners came to me and asked how I was doing. I am a terrible liar. and, I really liked this couple, so I wasn’t going to be disrespectful. I told them that I was using the portable heater. He looked at me and grinned, he already knew this. He said he could see the heating usage reflected in the bills. He wasn’t upset and apologized for assuming I knew how to start the fire. He said he would help me a lot more when the fall came back around. I was so relieved that he was not mad. They are really some of the best landlords I have had in a long time.
